Malcolm Brain and a group of shooters from Sussex had success at the Jersey open this year.
On the final day of shooting Malcolm came fourth in the Double Dewar in the morning which left him six points clear in the Grand Aggregate and eight points clear in the Veterans. The Double Dewar also completed the 100 yard Aggregate, which Malcolm won by a clear 12 points. The final competition was an English Match so it was Malcolm's to lose - and he gave it a good try!
First card 196, second 199, third 186 - probably an attack of the nerves - finishing with an 8 and a 7 with the last two shots! Even with that score Malcolm finished the English Match seven points off the pace so a half decent card would have won it.
Despite the poor last card Malcolm clung on by the skin of his teeth and won both the Veterans and the Grand Aggregate by one point from Linda Smallbone (Eastbourne) with Dave Swain (Bedford) a further two points behind and Sue Thomas (Eastbourne / Carlisle) fourth.
Earlier in the week a team consisting of Malcolm Brain, Linda Smallbone, Sara Marshall (Eastbourne) , Sue & Geoff Thomas beat the two teams put up by Jersey in a 20 shot match. Sue & Malcolm were joint top score with 199. Sara was using Malcolm's rifle with her own tube rear sights, butt plate & cheek piece! Using ISSF decimal scoring Malcolm ended up with 208.8 (out of a possible 218 - 10.9 x 20), with Sue on 206.8.
Diner & presentation of prizes was on the Sunday night followed by a ferry back to the mainland on Monday which was delayed because of the bad weather.
Shooters Comments
15 yd targets are interesting to say the least. The shot hole seems massive in comparison to the size of the aiming mark.
Electronic targets are brilliant! They would increase everybody's average against a 10 spot card - trouble is the cost.
